Mrs Nina Thomas

I had RLS for about 10 years. The doctor started me off on ropinerole and it worked for couple of years, I was then told to increase my dose and then for another few years that also eased it. I again had to go back to my GP and was told I was on the maximum dose.

I was then prescribed amitriptyline to add to my dose of ropinerole. Over the years as my RLS started creeping back in, my amitriptyline was increased from 1 up to 3, so my prescription was 1 ropinerole (max dose) and 3 amitriptyline. I began to put weight on but at least I could sleep!

Then on a weekend break trip to York, I went into a health shop and spoke to a lovely lady and she suggested magnesium. I have now taken it for 6 months and I haven't taken any medication from my GP for 2 months and my RLS has completely gone and I'm losing weight and sleeping like a baby every single night with absolutely no symptoms 🙂

  1. Thanks for the info. Im 79 and have been experiencing RLS for about 16 years, about the same time my sciatica started....little stretching would diminish symptoms. It has progressed to almost daily...tried Magnesium, but it ignited my microscopic colitis. Gabapentin 100mg. at nite, tonic water....??? It interrupts my sleep unless Im totally exhausted. Im very active and will work out on elliptical 3 x week, along with lots resistance workouts....Will be checking out this forum for updates on what may work...Pat L.

    1. Oh yes, had a minimally invasive procedure done by Nuero doc to relieve my sciatica….so that’s improved, but osteoporosis and aging issues persists….
It’s good to have found this site to keep looking for relief…TY

    2. I am glad the sciatica has improved. Aside from the traditional treatments for RLS, you will find lots of posts in this community from people who found relief in the strangest of ways, like by rubbing mint and charcoal toothpaste on the legs (Who would have thought?!) My theory is that RLS has multiple causes and that, therefore, different treatments work for different people. I hope you find something here that brings you relief as well. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

  2. Thanks for that, I'll get some...

    1. let me know how you get on 🙂

  3. Hello Nina,
Could I ask you what dose of magnesium you're taking?

    1. hi, I'm taking the brand viridian, high potency 300mg

  4. Nina, I am so glad to hear that magnesium helped your RLS. I have been taking it for several years (for migraine and RLS). If I miss a dose, my RLS lets me know! I will continue to take it even though research currently states there is no evidence that magnesium helps RLS. I know it contributes to a better quality of life for me. BarnGir1

    1. My theory is, if it helps you and your doctor is on board with it, then go for it! We've heard so many unique stories of different remedies that help people here. Nothing surprises me.

Magnesium is definitely powerful, though. Iron levels are also connected to RLS symptoms in some folks.

By the way, have you ever been to our sister site, Migraine.com? It's our oldest site and quite busy, if you ever want to connect with others with similar experiences. Take care -- wishing you continued success with magnesium! -Melissa, team member

    2. Thanks, Melissa! Yes, I check several migraine sites, get newsletters, attend Migraine World Summit as well as the UK RLS site. They have all been very beneficial, especially when I am in a slump of some sort. It has also been surprising to find overlaps in symptoms and treatments sometimes. The support is unbeatable.
