Tachyphylaxis

I've created this topic to discuss Tachyphylaxis, the medical term for decreased effectiveness of a medication, is something most of us have/will encounter along our medical journey.

I first experienced this with Glucosamine when I was 17yrs old. I was on the medication for, I think, less than a year before I built up a tolerance and the medication was ineffective. I've since experienced it with different birth control pills that were being taken for my Endometriosis.

Now it looks like I'm experiencing this a bit with my Pramipexole. I'm at a very low dose so there is room to increase the dosage before I'm pooched. I'm now taking 1mg and hoping that will be enough of a change.

Please feel free to share your experience here with us

  1. I have had RLS many years. Been having radually increasing doses of Pramipexole until now on max dose for RLS, which is usually helpful, but sometimes it's not enough. I'm coping at the moment but I worry what will happen when it's not working anymore. What else can I try?

    1. I take pramipexole but had to stop it at one stage due to augmentation issues. I used diazepam is a short interim measure and then I was put onto pregabalin. Eventually I reintroduced a low dose of pramipexole and I now manage really well with the low dose in addition to the pregabalin. It has worked well for me for many years. I hope you’re able to find a solution that works for you.

      Cheers.

  2. I struggle with this as well with most medications in general and it’s so frustrating. Some work for a week and then just stop, some work for a few months and then I need higher and higher doses.

    1. MMJ is legal here (Colorado)but unfortunately it doesn’t do for me what it does for everyone else. I’ve tried several different strains, different ingestion methods (smoking, eating, vaping). Nothing has worked in that realm for me sadly. Not THC and not CBD.

    2. That's so unfortunate that you haven't been able to find something that works. Up here, there are people who can help guide us to the best strains and methods of consumption for the disease(s) we have. Is that an option in Colorado?

I hope I'm not sounding pushy, I have been studying medical marijuana for a little more than a decade now so I know it's something that can be a bit tricky to find the right combo cause of body chemistry.

  3. 🚩Correction: I'm taking 0.50mg now, not 1mg. 🚩
