I have literally cured my RLS for about 97%

I have had RLS for over 60 years and finally figured things out. I have not eaten any DAIRY now for several months. I drink Almond milk, do not eat many sweets and can lay down and go to sleep like normal. I do take 3 mg of diazepam which relaxes me enough that sleep comes good. I have been on that for almost 8 years but it didn't help much until I gave up all dairy. Hope this helps somebody out there.

  1. How bad was your rls and was u on any medication

    1. There were nights I only got 3 hours sleep. In the beginning it wasn't that bad but it got worse and worse. I would have to call work in the middle of the night to tell them I would be late as I hadn't slept enough to function. They had me take 4 different RLS meds and I had bad sides effects from all of them; one being insomnia which didn't make sense as I was already not sleeping well. I could not take one of them. The only meds I took and still take was 3 mg of diazepam just to try to relax some. But I've gotten used to the meds and they don't work as well as they used to so I am trying to cut back. But cutting back will take awhile as it is addictive. I tried a test two nights ago and had a quesadilla with cheese. Can't do that as my legs were so bad I was up until 2:00 am. I did find some goat cheese and have had some for lunch. I'll see how that goes. Maybe I'm only allergic to cow's dairy.

  2. I remembered last night that when I sent this post I forgot to mention I also eat foods with potassium and take 400mg 0f magnesium daily. It kind of all works together for sleep. I hope this will help many people.

    1. Hi Judith, thanks so much for your comments. The dairy part of your story is interesting., cos I have a great love affair with dairy. I’m under the care of a Gastroenterologist as I have a Stoma. He keeps telling me to quit dairy, tho I confess I haven’t. If I did and it worked for my RLS I’d be laughing 🤪.
As it is, I’m getting very little sleep, just this weekend I woke Friday morning about 8am and didn’t go to sleep again till Sunday nite.
I’m 84 and have Fibromyalgia so jumpy legs is no friend to me.
Thank you to everyone who share their stories, it’s been amazing how common this problem is.
Re Benzos, they are a dangerous road to travel. Not usually prescribed in Australia for longer than 21 days. They are an amazing drug, but the dependency symptoms are the same as many of the conditions they are prescribed for. I’ve been told this problem wasn’t readily know back in the 70’s.
Well everyone, it’s close to midnight and, as usual sleep is far away for me yet. Sadly I don’t feel tired till around dawn, and that’s a long time to ‘ resell ‘ with RLS
Having said that, I wish you all a peaceful and restful nites sleep 😴 😴And sweet dreams. Maxine (Max) OD

  3. Thank u for your story. It’s interesting as dairy prevents iron absorption. There is such a relationship between iron, folate, B12 and RLS.

    1. It was indeed a miracle for me. I wish I would have had this knowledge 60 years ago. It's been a really horrible experience for way to long.

      1. I am so happy for you!! In the chronic illness world we talk a lot about having a good "toolkit" -- the right combination of medications, doctors, alternative therapies and lifestyle changes for each individual. It all looks unique from one person to the next, but it sounds like you finally found that missing piece you needed! What gave you the idea to give up dairy after all that time? Were you having other problems, too? Thank you so much for sharing with the community -- I wish you many peaceful nights ahead! -Melissa, team member
