The only thing that has helped me.

So, after trial and error and not finding anything about this online, I decided to post here. I had been on and off struggling with sleepless nights for decades and after an especially bad stint after trying a vegetarian lifestyle for a month, I figured out a lot of vegetarian processed foods are supplemented with with synthetic B12, Cyanocobalamin. I found that if I cut synthetic B12 from my diet I had no restless leg syndrome after about one week. I haven't had a problem for years because a check every product label and avoid anything with synthetic B12. Naturally occurring B12, methylcobalamin, from foods gives me no issue, though I don't really take any large dose supplements. I was reminded last night (which prompted me to post) of how sensitive I am to this after I ate some home made rice crispy treats after work, that my kids had made while I was gone. I ate two small 2x2x2" squares, probably a small serving of the cereal. Took me hours to fall asleep that night after waking multiple times at just the point I usually fell off with that all too familiar, random sensation that I had to move my legs/feet. I woke up in the morning wondering what could possibly have caused it and remembered the random addition to my diet and checked the discarded cereal box to find it had 30% daily portion of B12.
I've seen no literature on this particular topic and after pointed internet searches I have not seen this covered. Thought I would throw it out here in the hope it helps anyone else. It's not hard to cut it out if you look for it and I don't feel restricted in diet at all. I know it may just be something that is unique to me, psychosomatic or whatever but....whenever my symptoms start to show up (even after years of not having syptoms) I have always been able to track it to synthetic b12, after I unknowingly consumed a partially processed food containing it. Rarely at a restaurant, but when it happens it has been at a vegetarian one. Best wishes and I hope this helps someone!!!

  1. I did not know there were synthetic vs. organic vitamins and minerals. This is fascinating but also complicates trying to manage diet as it effects RLS and other individual issues. Any general guidelines to help determine the difference? Thanks, BarnGir1

    1. Hi . I am not super familiar with synthetic B12, but if you are not vegetarian, you probably won't encounter it as much. Vegetarian are often deficient in B12 because animal products are the best natural source. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. eggs are high in b12.

  2. Hi . This is really interesting. I wonder what is in the synthetic version that you are sensitive to. I am glad you figured it out and that you are able to keep it out of your diet. How wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. How curious it is to read this, i have posted a few time ago a thread where i just mention how B12 and Folic Acid has helped me greatly to the point of even stopping the insomnia and symptoms.

It would be interesting to hear a professional opinion on the matter.

      1. Yes, sorry for the late response, i came back here after a few time.
The supplements, definitely help me, as i have also experimented with taking them out, and witnessed how my symptoms get more severe, i have also described how they have changed with the supplements in th thread i have posted about it, i also have to say, that changing my daily habits and schedule has probably been the most important thing to do, i will probably talk about it in detail in the near future.

      2. That's wonderful to hear, . Thanks for getting back to me. I look forward to reading more about what strategies and techniques have helped. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)
