Help! Super miserable!

I have had restless legs for quite a while(really since I was a child), along with fibromyalgia (diagnosed when I was 3😎, central sleep apnea, & Hashimotos. I’m 69 and have been taking Gabapentin for about 3 years (200 mg once a day). I also have had a cyst at L3/4 that has caused sciatic pain since 7/2021. Thankfully, the hip, calf, and knee pain from that has been 100% better and I’ve avoided back surgery which I think would exacerbate my other issues through the inactivity of recovery. I’ve had Covid twice, am fully vaccinated. At first, the Gabapentin was a godsend. In the past month, the rls has been a nightly torture. Today, it’s hounded me all day long and I dread going to bed at night. It makes me less likely to wear my Cpap, which a I know is counter productive but when I’ve been awake until 3, I just want to give in to sleep. My pain doc for the cyst said I could take an additional 200 mg for the nerve pain so occasionally I do but don’t notice that helping the rls particularly.
I guess it’s time to contact my primary care Dr but I hate to increase the meds as they all cause me to gain weight. I’m currently really trying to eat well and have lost 4 pounds since New Years so hate to ruin my progress. I think if I would lose 15-20 pounds (am 5’5” and 162 pounds) maybe all these issues would be better. I often think my leg pain is from carrying too much weight for my frame. Really just looking for some advice/comfort from those who are fellow sufferers. I take magnesium glycine, GABA, calcium at night. I almost always take a bath in ur jetted tub with epsom salts at night. I currently have too many red blood cells so shouldn’t take iron. I walk a mile or so daily, sometimes up to 3-4 miles. I avoid alcohol, only have caffeine in the morning, have never smoked. I have leg squeezers like they put on you in the hospital and those help some. My pain Dr for the back issue is closing her practice so I have an appt in 2 weeks just to establish with a new Dr.
Thanks for letting me whine!

  1. Jag har haft RLS i 20 år, jag har sovit gott nu i en månad sen jag började ta de här. Jag har provat alla magnesium tillskott och det är bara denna som funkat för mig. Trippel Magnesium, finns på apotek etc.

    1. Hi . We are currently only able to moderate in English. I used a translation tool to read your comment though, and I think you are saying that this triple magnesium supplement has helped ease your RLS. Is that right? Thanks for sharing what helps. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Fibro since I was 38- not sure how the cute emoji got there!

    1. Whine all you want, ! That's what we are here for -- to offer support and give you a safe place to vent. It sounds like the nights have been miserable lately. Have you ever taken any presciption medications besides gabapentin for your RLS? Here is an article about treatments: https://restlesslegssyndrome.sleep-disorders.net/treatment. Maybe you could use this to start a conversation with your doctor about other options. It's hard to say what might happen after back surgery. It might make your symptoms worse, but we've also had a member or two who fully recovered from RLS as an effect of lower back surgery. I hope, if your cyst ever progresses to a point where you need surgery, that you are one of those few people. How long has it been since you last saw a neurologist? Since you were diagnosed so young, maybe a fresh evaluation from a specialist would be helpful.
I hope others chime in here with some advice. RLS is a strange condition. Many people accidently stumble on odd treatments that make symptoms better. For instance, one member recently found that her symptoms improved dramatically when she started using a cream that contains gelatin. Another saw improvement with massage at pain points. You never know, so please don't give up on finding relief. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
