Ray Li

RLS Community Advocate Ray LiRay Li started taking interpretive dance classes when she was 8 years old but, two years later, had to stop because her legs were hurting too much and her joints were becoming stiff. Her mom said it was just growing pains so it would stop soon. Pop culture also made it seem like it was just growing pains, there was nothing that had kids with restless legs syndrome (RLS).

However, it never stopped, and soon was accompanied by sleep issues. It wasn't until she started seeking medical attention for other health issues at 23 years old that RLS was first suggested. After looking up RLS, so much of her past made sense. The various pains that can flare up in the evening and get worse in bed finally had a name. It was not just growing pains, it wasn't just in her head.

Ray Li has also been diagnosed with endometriosis, IBS, fibromyalgia, joint hypermobility and obstructive sleep apnea. In 2020, she had the sleep study test done to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea and to confirm RLS. She finally was prescribed medication and magnesium to help ease some of the RLS symptoms, but it's not perfect. Some days the RLS isn't so bad and other times the spasms are brutal.

Ray Li lives with her amazingly supportive husband in a beautiful section of Canada, surrounded by nature galore. When Ray Li has the energy she loves to be outdoors, especially visiting her dad in the Kootenays. She has fewer issues and is able to be more active. Ray Li also spends lots of time on Twitter and Instagram sharing her medical journey so that others in the same boat don't feel so alone.
